Developing community leaders to change their own community is at the very core of what Amigos for Christ does. Every community elects leaders for community development, water system management, and youth development.
Before joining the Young Leaders Committee, Bianka’s life was much like many others in her community—full of aspirations but limited by resources. Inspired by her mother’s dedication to serving on the community development committee but also seeing how hard she was working to give a better future for herself and her sibling, Bianka dreamt of a better future for the youth in her community. Her mother often spoke about the importance of education, but Bianka never imagined that she would have the chance to make a difference in the way she did.

Education was not always a priority in her community, and many children struggled to stay in school. After school hours, or during special activities or meal programs, there were few opportunities for students to receive extra support. But Bianka often wondered how she could contribute to the change she wanted to see but didn’t know where to begin.
Her moment came when the community’s youth committee needed new leaders. Even though she was unsure about her abilities, Bianka was elected by the whole community to be a part of the committee. Little did she know that this would open the door to opportunities she had never imagined for herself or her community.

One of the goals that Amigos for Christ wants to achieve working with the communities is that 100% of kids go to school. Making sure everyone is attending class is the main focus so these kids can become the next generation of future leaders in Nicaragua.
With support from Amigos for Christ, Bianka took on the role of a leader. She started tutoring children after school in her home, with the support of other youth, they offered these kids the help they needed to succeed in school. At first, only a few children came, but as word spread, more kids began showing up. They admired her patience and care, soon calling her “Profe” (teacher) and looking up to her as a role model.
As the after-school program grew, so did her confidence and leadership. When the Youth Committee coordinator stepped down, the community saw Bianka’s potential and asked her to take the role. Though nervous, Natalia embraced the opportunity, continuing to guide the children and encourage them to pursue their education. Her dedication to helping others reflected the very heart of the Youth Committee’s purpose: supporting the long-term success of the community.
One day, when the school in her community needed a new teacher, Bianka was the obvious choice. The parents, community leaders, and teachers recognized her passion and her impact on the children. Natalia accepted the position, officially becoming a teacher. Now, she not only helps students during school hours but also continues to mentor them after school, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.

Bianka’s story is a powerful example of how investing in young leaders can transform a community. Through her dedication, she is helping to build a sustainable future where education and opportunity are accessible to all. Her journey reminds us that when we work together, support one another, and make Christ visible, transformation is possible—juntos.
