Team Spotlight: Marierling

On any given day, you can find Marierling in the communities where we work, walking from house to house, visiting with families. She is one of 26 Community Advocates who, as a team, visit nearly 8,000 people on a monthly basis. Leading with humility, she spends her days getting to know each family that her team serves. The relationships built by her team are the backbone of Amigos. However, when the pandemic hit in early March, all of that changed.
When your job is visiting with people, a pandemic – requiring social distancing and masks – means that your team must adapt quickly. “We couldn’t do house visits as usual, but we knew we had to do something. These families needed basic materials like soap, bleach, masks, and hand sanitizer.”

Marierling led the distribution of tens of thousands of pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand sanitizer, and more. “Our purpose was making sure the families felt like someone was walking alongside them in these difficult times, to let them know that we were thinking about them and to let them know that they were not alone.”

For anyone who knows Marierling, her dedication and leadership in the face of a pandemic was no surprise. In nearly 20 years of working for Amigos, she has left many lasting marks on the way we operate. One of these marks transformed how we implement Plan 7. Marierling knew that for Plan 7 to lead to lasting change, each family needed its own flexible plan. While building a Modern Bathroom might be difficult for one family, another may struggle instead to repay a Microcredit Loan. Under her leadership, in 2020, the Community Advocates tailored personalized plans to address the needs of each individual family.

“For me, working at Amigos for Christ means you have the opportunity to influence people by listening and creating bonds. The best part of my job is making people feel important, heard, and guided towards the path of transformation.”

Marierling, thank you for all you do. Your light shines everywhere you go through your compassion, dedication, and tireless commitment to transforming lives. You are making Christ more visible.
