Ana María Rivera (26) and her husband Roberto (29) have spent the last eight years building their life in Carlos Fonseca, raising their two daughters, Jeymi (8) and Daniela (1.5). Like many families in the community, their home lacked proper sanitation, and daily life was marked by discomfort and health concerns tied to their living conditions.Their story has been shaped by perseverance, faith, and a deep desire to create a better future for their children.
Before access to clean water, daily life was difficult and uncertain. With only a dry well at home, the family relied on borrowing or purchasing water from Roberto’s father, using a hose to transfer it between houses. Ana’s family used a latrine that was unsanitary, filled with odors, and often attracted pests. It was not a safe or dignified space for their family, especially for their young daughters. “It was very uncomfortable, and we didn’t feel clean or safe,” Ana shared. The lack of proper sanitation also contributed to ongoing health challenges within the home. “There were days I preferred not to drink much water,” Ana shared, “because I was afraid of getting sick.”
In August 2025, through Amigos for Christ’s Plan 7 program, Ana and her family built a modern bathroom in their home. This project marked a significant turning point. After completing the bathroom, the family was able to close their latrine for good. “Having a bathroom in our home has changed our lives,” Ana said. “Now everything feels cleaner, safer, and more dignified.”
Since then, the family has taken pride in their new space, adding personal touches like paint, lighting, and other details to make it their own. More importantly, their health has improved, and they are able to practice better hygiene every day. Their daughters are growing up in a healthier environment, learning habits that will stay with them for life.
This transformation has brought more than physical change—it has brought peace of mind and hope for the future. “We feel different now,” Ana expressed. “We are more at peace in our home.” With this foundation, Ana and Roberto continue working toward new goals, building a better and more secure future for their family.
